Introduction The University's Academic Promotion policy sets out the guiding principles for Academic Promotion at ANU. The accompanying Academic Promotion Procedure provides details of the process.
Principles Academic Promotions is the mechanism for determining the eligibility of academic staff for promotion by assessing them for sustained excellence in education, research and service.
An Academic Promotions round will be held each year in which all applications for promotion to Levels B through to E1 will be considered.
Suitability for promotion is established on the examination of the case made in the three areas of output: research or creative activity; education; and service. Promotion cases will be assessed on the basis of the written case received, reports from assessors and the interview (where relevant).
Applicants must hold a fixed term or continuing academic appointment or academic status with the University. ANU staff on fellowship appointments are also eligible for promotion.
The supervisor, with the assistance of the applicant, will be responsible for initiating and facilitating the case for promotion. The staff member may initiate a case when they believe that their performance and contribution warrants promotion, but the supervisor has not assessed this to be the case.
An application for promotion to levels B through to E1 may be considered outside of the usual promotion round upon request of a College Dean or College Director or the Vice-Chancellor. Applications for promotion out-of-round must meet the set criteria, and will be assessed through the process set out in the Academic Promotion Procedure.
There are no quotas on promotion to any level in any academic area.
The Vice-Chancellor will report to a meeting of the Academic Board once each year on the outcomes of that year's promotion round. The report will include information on the number of cases considered and determined by area, level and gender.
The timetable for the annual round will be published and confirmed by the Human Resources Division. The annual round timetable may be altered at the discretion of the Vice-Chancellor.
Promotion (if successful) will take effect on the first pay of the following calendar year from the round.
Staff members who are unsuccessful may appeal if they believe that there has been a breach of procedure.
