Principles

Allowances may be paid to eligible staff members as part of their remuneration package, to meet operational requirements.

Academic Staff Allowances

The following types of allowances may be paid to Academic staff:

Clinical Loading

Clinical Loadingis paid to a medically qualified full time staff member atLevel B or higher who is employed in a medical sciences area.

General Staff Allowances

The following types of allowances may be paid to eligible General staff:

Higher Duties Allowance (HDA)

HDA is paid where a general staff member is performing higher duties in a higher level position whilst the occupant is absent.

Long Service Allowance (LSA)

LSA is paid where the staff member has been employed by the University before 11 March 1993 in a pre-ANU Officer classification listed in the table in the schedule provided that the staff member has at least 10 years continuous and satisfactory service (excluding casual employment) and has been paid at the top of his or her current salary range for 5 years.

Overtime allowances

There are a number of overtime allowances that may be paid to eligible staff. These include:

  • Availability duty allowance
  • Continuous standby allowance
  • Short call allowance
  • Cancellation allowance
  • Meal allowance
  • Overtime travelling allowance

Specific Pathogen Free Allowance

Staff members working in the Specific Pathogen Free Mouse Breeding Colony in the Animal Breeding Establishment of the John Curtin School of Medical Research and is required to carry out the major part of his or her duties in the Specific Pathogen Free area will be paid this allowance.

Allowances for maintenance and grounds staff

There are a number of allowances for maintenance and grounds staff. These include:

  • Industry allowance
  • Trade allowance for plumbers
  • Tool allowance

Allowances for cleaners

A staff member who is required to clean lavatories for the major portion of a day or shift will be paid this allowance.

Annualised allowance for security officers

The annualised allowance for security officers is paid where regular overtime is worked in lieu of overtime allowances to compensate for all overtime worked.

First aid allowance

First aid allowance will be paid where a staff member is designated as first aid attendant in accordance with First aid procedures.

Uniform allowance

An allowance will be paid where staff are required to wear particular/special articles of clothing during the performance of their duties.

Laundry allowance

A staff member employed in the Hospitality stream and who is required to wear a uniform while on duty will be paid this allowance.

Special Conditions for staff at NARU, Warramunga Seismic Array and Siding Spring Observatory

Eligible staff who work at the research facilities of NARU in Darwin, NT;Warramunga Seismic Array in Tennant Creek, NT and Siding Spring Observatory in Coonabarabran, NSW may be paid District allowance and/or Leave fares assistance.
