The University recognises that the roles and responsibilities of Deans and Directors are considerable and that it may be necessary for them to be assisted by the allocation of certain roles and responsibilities to Deputy, Associate and Sub Deans or Directors. The University recognises that in accepting appointment as Deputy, Associate and Sub Deans or Directors, academic staff will necessarily be diverted from the pursuit of their own academic activities. It is therefore appropriate that such staff receive compensation by way of a salary loading.
Typical Roles and Responsibilities
Deputy, Associate and Sub Deans or Directors act under delegated authority of the Dean or Director.
The following general statements provide guidance on what Deputy, Associate and Sub Deans or Directors may be asked to do as part of their duties. They are neither prescription nor exhaustive. Deputy, Associate and Sub Deans or Directors may be asked to perform a wide range of managerial and ceremonial functions on behalf of a Dean or Director.
1. Without limiting or overlapping with the roles of prescribed authorities, they may have responsibility for undergraduate programs and coursework components of postgraduate programs.
2. They may have an oversight role for graduate students on behalf of the Dean or Director and may be titled "Graduate Program Convenor". They could therefore be the primary point of contact for the School, Faculty of Centre for ensuring effective supervision and oversight of postgraduate students.
3. They may coordinate Faculty policy development with regard to all undergraduate programs and the coursework components of postgraduate programs. That could encompass policy on:
4. They will, as required, represent the Faculty, School or Centre on committees relevant to fulfilling their roles and responsibilities.
