This policy should be read in conjunction with the relevant legislation and academic eligibility requirements of ANU and applies to all undergraduate, graduate coursework and higher degree research programs.. All applicants, whether local or international, for admission to any ANU program or course delivered either in Australia or overseas must provide evidence that their English language ability meets the minimum requirements for admission. Applicants may be deemed to have satisfied the English language requirements if they can provide evidence that they meet one or more of the following criteria: - Successful completion of prior full-time study in the medium of English for a minimum of 2 years in one of the countries listed below under Citizenship Status #; and
- The study must have been completed no more than two years prior to the date of application to the ANU program; or
- Successful performance in an acceptable English language test taken within the past two years.
# International applicants completing the ACT Year 12 Certificate from 2012 onwards will be required to achieve a result of at least 170 in English as a Second Language T major or any result in an English T major. Regardless of ANU's requirements International applicants should be aware that they must still satisfy the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) English language requirements for visa applications. SUBSEQUENT ENGLISH If subsequent evidence is received demonstrating English as being insufficient the University has the right to rescind any previous offers. CITIZENSHIP STATUS Citizens of the following countries are not required to provide evidence of English language proficiency where their previous secondary and/or tertiary study is known to have been conducted in English in the national education system (or equivalent) and/or at a recognised, local university in their home country: - Australia
- Canada (excluding Quebec)
- Fiji
- Ireland
- Kenya
- New Zealand
- Papua New Guinea
- Singapore
- Solomon Islands
- South Africa
- United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland)
- United States of America
- Samoa
- Zambia
* These countries are from the list determined by the ANU Admissions Standards Committee. PRIOR STUDY Where Citizenship status and/or where the most recent studies of two years or more in countries not listed above will be considered on a case by case basis when full documentary evidence satisfies the University. Applicants who have successfully completed two full-time years of study or equivalent at a University or other post-secondary educational institution, where the sole language of instruction and assessment was English, may not be required to undertake a language test, if they can provide a statement or certificate, issued by the Registrar's Office (or equivalent) of that institution confirming this. This study must have been completed no more than two years prior to the date of application to the ANU program. The statement or certificate must be on headed paper, and must be an original. Information included must be: Student Name, Degree Name and statement that the degree program was solely conducted and examined in English. The University reserves the right to request that the applicant undergoes an English test in addition to any other evidence of English proficiency provided. ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTS ANU recognises a number of English language tests as meeting the University's English language requirements. Accepted English language tests, together with their minimum results needed for admission are: | Test | Regular Degree Programs (Including Exchange & Study Abroad) ^ | Australian National Internships Program , undergraduate Law, JD and Legal Workshop programs | Graduate Law programs (except JD and Legal Workshop programs) | | Academic IELTS^ | An overall score of 6.5 with at least 6 in each component of the test | An overall score of 7 with at least 6 in each component | An overall score of 7 with at least 7 in writing and at least 6 each other component | | TOEFL** - paper based test | A score of 570 with TWE* score of 4.5 | A score of 600 with TWE* score of 5.0 | A score or 650 with a TWE of 5.0 | | TOEFL** - internet based test | A score of 90, with a minimum of 20 in all four sections | A score of 100, with a minimum of 22 in all four sections | A score of 110, with a minimum of 26 in writing and at least 22 in all other sections | * TWE = Test of Written English. ** Applicants may use the ANU institutional code 0506 for faster processing of results. ^ Students on development assistance scholarships such as AusAID, The Asian Development Bank or The World Bank enrolling in the Crawford School of Economics and Government require an overall IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 6.0 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in the remaining components of the IELTS to enter the Graduate Diploma. It is understood that concurrent English language support will be provided to those students by CSEG. PACKAGE OFFERS International applicants require a minimum score to gain entry into ANU Foundation Studies: | Academic IELTS | An overall score of 5.5 with at least 5.0 in writing | | TOEFL paper based test | A score of 520 with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 3.5 | | TOEFL internet based test | A score of 68 with Writing at 17-18 | International applicants require a minimum score to gain entry into ANU Access English Program (Not accepted by Law): | Academic IELTS | An overall score of 6.0 with at least 5.0 | | TOEFL paper based test | A score of 550 with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.0 | | TOEFL internet based test | A score of 78 | A packaged offer may be given if applicants have the academic qualifications required for entry but whose results did not meet the English language requirements. The package offer is valid for ANU College only and is subject to acceptance by ANU College. A package offer enables applicants to apply for a student visa for the duration of both the English language program and the ANU studies. CONDITIONAL OFFERS Applicants who provide English test results that fail to meet the minimum standard required by the University, or who fail to provide any evidence of English language proficiency will be assessed for eligibility for admission and, if successful, may be issued with a Conditional Offer of admission. This means that the applicant is not permitted to enrol in the program of study and will have their English language proficiency reassessed as soon as evidence of proficiency has been provided by the applicant. A full offer of admission will be issued only when English language proficiency requirements have been met. WAIVERS - in exceptional circumstances A waiver of the English language requirement will rarely be given and is on the determination of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor via the Admissions Office. Waivers cannot be requested by applicants but may only be requested by the relevant ANU College to which they have applied. . These qualifications and results required, are listed in Schedule A and must have been undertaken no more than two years prior to the date of application. This schedule may be updated from time to time on a recommendation from the Admissions Standards Committee to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
