Principles

1.   The Head of an Academic Organisational Unit (AOU) is a member of academic staff who is accountable to a Dean of College, and/or a Director of a Research School or Faculty or University Centre, for the leadership and management of an organisational unit.

2.   The role of a Head of an AOU is to contribute to the achievement of ANU goals by providing leadership to the AOU, and contributing to their discipline and their relevant College Strategic Plan.

3.   The specific responsibilities of the Head (guidelines provided in Attachment A) include responsibility for the academic program and the financial, staffing and other management arrangements of the AOU.

4.    The Head will be appointed following a merit-based selection process.

5.    The Head of an AOU is appointed by the College Dean, usually for three to five years, on the recommendation of the relevant Director.

6.    The Head of an AOU will be paid a superanuable indexed loading. The dollar value of the loading is determined by the size of the AOU (see procedures for detail) and is paid in addition to the substantive salary of the appointee.
