Principles

A critical incident can be described as any incident physical or psychological that has an impact on students. The severity can differ. For example:

 

-          Natural disasters and emergencies

-          Incidents that involve students/ their families

-          Disasters emergencies such as war, coups', etc

 

International Student Service (ISS) under the direction of the Registrar will:

 

-          Issue all relevant staff with a Critical Incident Management Plan

-          Provide a one page flow chart and contact numbers

 

The following information will be made available to staff and will be managed by ISS:

 

-          Telephone numbers of staff

-          Names and contact s of key stakeholders

-          Student contact information, including address, email and phone numbers

-          Details of all names of students and staff participating in ISS off campus events

-          Contact list of off campus people who need to be informed

-          Embassy and off campus organisations contact details

-          Back up thumb drive with this information to be stored in a central location

 

 

 

Responding to an emergency

 

Direction should be discussed with, and approved by the Registrar or the delegate in accordance with the university's overarching ANU Emergency Procedures.

 

ISS Response Team will:

-          create a clear understanding of the known facts

assess what has happened/ the level of severity, and

who is , and how many students are involved

-          plan an immediate response

-          plan ongoing strategies

 

-          allocate individual roles/responsibilities for ongoing tasks

-          ensure appropriate follow up

-          place Incident Report and follow up information on the file of each student involved

 

 

 

 

 

In conjunction with/On advice/approval  from  with the Registrar and/or the appropriate delegates, the Manager, International Student Services (MISS) will as required:

 

-          act as point of contact between ANU Security/Response Team

-          liaise with relevant university staff

-          ensure  next of kin has been informed (by the AFP or Registrar or relevant delegate)

-          liaise with Doctors, hospital, DFAT, Embassy when/if appropriate

-          work out guidelines for briefing of students/staff/College or Class mates

-          brief Registrar

-          liaise with DIAC if studies interrupted

-          assist with legal issues if appropriate

-          manage OSHC issues

-          arrange financial assistance for family to return home if appropriate OSHC Worldcare's TEAM package will be able to assist in certain cases

-          if required assist in arranging visit from family

-           notify sponsoring agent if student sponsored

-          liaise with ANU Chaplain or other religious personnel on arrangements for funeral/memorial service

-          consider personal items and affairs

-          provide the Registrar with information about the student to assist in the condolence letter from the Vice-Chancellor
