Principles

PART TIME EMPLOYMENT BY FULL TIME GRADUATE DEGREE STUDENTS

The Graduate Degrees Committee has approved the application of the following principles in relation to part-time employment by full-time graduate degree students.

1. It is the University's expectation that a full-time graduate degree student devote at least 40 hours per week to her/his course.

2. The academic interests of a graduate student in pursuing a course of study and/or research in completing the degree are paramount and any part-time employment must not adversely affect progress towards completion of the course.

3. A full-time graduate degree student is permitted to undertake part-time employment up to six hours per week and subject to the prior approval of the supervisor(s) and head of department/centre/unit/program may be permitted to undertake part-time employment up to a total of 20 hours per week during the academic year (i.e. for research students during the 48 weeks in the year they are required to pursue the course).

These principles also apply to part-time students holding an Australian Postgraduate Award or an ANU PhD or Master degree scholarship.
