Procedure

The Australian National University recognises that asbestos containing products were used in the construction of some plant and equipment, and in many University buildings, as they were in many residential dwellings, constructed during that period (pre-1988).  The University also acknowledges that airborne asbestos fibres pose a risk to human health.

In recognition of this, the University has an active asbestos management program that includes the identification, labelling, encapsulation or removal, and safe disposal of asbestos containing material, as relevant.

The University cares about your wellbeing and is managing asbestos (and other hazards) in a responsible manor.  Your cooperation is sought in maintaining the integrity of the asbestos management program and reducing the risk of creating airborne fibres.  In particular, it is important that you do not disturb, in any way (eg drilling, cutting, building modifications etc), possible or known asbestos material.  Please contact Facilities and Services or your Building Manager if work is required.

You are encouraged to discuss any concerns with the Occupational Health and Safety Unit, or Facilities and Services.  Further information on asbestos is available from Comcare or ACT WorkCover(http://www.asbestos.act.gov.au)
