Procedure: Public holidays and University closedown

Purpose

To inform staff of public holiday and University closure entitlements in accordance with the ANU Enterprise Agreement.

Procedure

Public holidays

  1. Any day gazetted or proclaimed as a public holiday, at the location the staff member is working, will be taken on full pay, except that a casual staff member who is not required to work on such a day will not be entitled to payment for that day.
  2. The public holidays observed in the ACT each year are:

New Year’s Day

Anzac Day

Australia Day

Reconciliation Day*

Canberra Day*

King’s Birthday

Good Friday

Labour Day

Easter Saturday

Christmas Day

Easter Sunday

Boxing Day

Easter Monday

*ACT only

Substitution of public holidays

  1. Where the University and an individual staff member agree, and subject to operational requirements, another day may be substituted for any public holiday.
  2. No penalty rates will apply to staff working on gazetted or proclaimed public holiday substituted in accordance with this clause as long as the staff member is granted a day off in lieu.
  3. The substituted day will be for the full day and in accordance with the staff member’s regular hours of work on that day.
  4. It is not intended that staff members should substitute multiple public holidays to accumulate an extended period of days in lieu.
  5. As a guide, staff should discuss any substitution with their supervisor at least two weeks in advance. Supervisors will take such requests into consideration, also noting the operational requirements of the business area. At this time the substituted day/s should be agreed upon.
  6. The agreement for substitution should be communicated in writing between the supervisor and staff member, to ensure that work arrangements are appropriately recorded.

University closure

  1. The closure of the University during the standard working days between 25 December and 1 January each year will be determined by the Vice-Chancellor and President. A College Dean or Service Division Director may vary these arrangements for an organisational unit in order to meet essential operational or research requirements.
  2. Where an organisational unit does close, the staff of that unit will be granted additional paid leave for those days which are not public holidays, and which they would otherwise have worked. Where an organisational unit is closed and a staff member is directed to work, time in lieu will be granted for time worked.
